Beyond the borders of the page

Beyond the borders of the page

I've begun writing about more than three dimensions. I'm not sure what's going to happen. I can say that I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Anything else might be treason against The League of Metaphysical Scientists (ThLoMS), so I'm just going to have to surrender myself to the absurd.

In lighter news...

In lighter news...

...all four midnight showings of Sin City at the Arclight are sold out (there's one that's a digital projection presentation at 12:25 AM). Not only that, the reviews are looking pretty good. Can't wait to see it if only for Mickey Rourke as Marv and Clive Owen's intentionally hammy American accent. Scantily clad women are also nice.

[UPDATE: By the way, the editing in Unforgiven sucks. Obvious, hardcore suck. On the other hand, to hear Gene Hackman say (thumbs resting in his forepockets), "Hell, I even thought I was dead...till I found out it was just that I was in Nebraska" makes up for quite a bit.

{UPDATE-UPDATE: Okay, goddammit. The acting's so good in Unforgiven that it makes up for the poor editing. I maintain, however, that the film is poorly cut. Man, this is like a play-by-play of me watching the movie.}]

Listening to:
  • Guero, Beck
  • Two Conversations, Appleseed Cast
  • Funeral, The Arcade Fire

The new Weezer single, "Beverly Hills", is also really keen.

    Watching:
  • Thriller: A Cruel Film (They Call Her One Eye)

  • Mitch Hedberg dead

    Mitch Hedberg dead

Mitch Hedberg fucking died yesterday. How incredibly random and tragic is that? Man, I was just listening to one of his stand-up acts the other day, too.

[UPDATE: The pope has had a heart attack and--according to The New York Times--has been given his last rites.]

    The good life

    The good life

Another quiet day of defrosting my freezers, proofing a friend's script, reading some Comics Journal, listening to some white rap ballads and going to see Oldboy at the Nuart this afternoon. Did I mention the weather's perfect, too? Ahhhhh.

    Reading:
  • Comics Journal v. 266 & 265
  • Fortune & Glory, Brian Michael Bendis
  • The Uncanny, Sigmund Freud (I know, I know. I don't wanna talk about it. I swear this is the last day you'll see this book here.)

    Listening to:
  • white rap ballads
  • Guero, Beck (He just had to have the Beastie Boys help produce the first track, didn't he? Quickest way to get me hooked...besides crack. But I can't live on the streets again. Not after the dead hooker incident [they said she was already dead before I got there, but still...].)

    Watching:
  • Unforgiven
  • Oldboy
  • "Clerks: The Cartoon"

And the weird thing is they're actually really good.

And the weird thing is they're actually really good.

Well, I've been working quite a bit lately, but it seems like I have a little break from working for at least the next few days or so. *deep breath* Oh yeah. That's nice.

I actually got to walk to the comics store today, which I hadn't gotten to do in a long time. I only picked up a Comics Journal I was missing, but it's fun to browse every now and then. Feel the texture and weight of the stuff you're leaving in the store. And then laugh and laugh when you leave them sitting on the shelf. And my home is so cool and dry, my shelves so free of dust! Take that expensive books! You shall learn to be less costly! Until they get to go home with some movie executive comic geek, that is.

Non-sequitur! I've had Annie's "Chewing Gum" stuck in my head all day. Goddamn you, Eric.

Also, for your viewing pleasure I present Overcompensating, a funny comic. In addition to that, I think you should take a peek at Ulli's Roy Orbison in cling-film site, the site to which the title of this post refers. It's a series of short stories about...well, it seems pretty obvious. There are five standard ("standard", of course, being a relative term) stories, a Christmas special and a ROiC in Space story. I wish I was that demented and clever. And/or, really.

    Enjoy.

[UPDATE: Listen to Nina Gordon's cover of NWA's "Straight Outta Compton"--downloadable from her website--and you will know that all is right with the world.]

[UPDATE, UPDATE: After you're done checking out Nina Gordon's cover, you might also want to check out Dynamite Hacks' cover of another NWA song, "Boyz-in-the-Hood". I'm sure you've probably heard it before, but it's thematically similar to Gordon's piece that it's worth mentioning.]
